The George A. and Eliza Gardner Howard Foundation is an independent agency reporting to the Graduate School of Brown University. The Foundation awards a limited number of fellowships each year for independent projects in selected fields, targeting its support specifically to early mid-career individuals, those who have achieved recognition for at least one major project. About ten fellowships of $33,000 will be awarded in April 2017 for 2017-2018 in the fields of
Photography, Anthropology, and Archaeology
Howard Fellowships are intended primarily to provide artists, scholars, and writers with time to complete their work. They are not intended for publication subsidies, for equipment purchase, for preparation of exhibits, or to support institutional programs. The deadline for submission of applications is November 1, 2016. Fellowship recipients will be announced in April 2017.
Fellowships are offered in a five-year sequence of fields. Recipients are given the option of postponing receipt of their fellowship, so as to make the Howard competition accessible to those whose personal plans do not line up exactly with the year in which awards are offered in their fields. For further information on the Howard Foundation, please visit the Foundation's website.
An application is initiated by creating an account to the right of this page. Applicants are asked to supply basic information about themselves and the proposed project and then to upload a project description (three double-spaced pages, ca. 800-900 words), a two-page curriculum vitae, and a portfolio of no more than ten images (for Photography) or a writing sample of no more than 20 pages (for Anthropology and Archaeology), along with the names and email addresses of two individuals willing to supply letters of recommendation for the applicant. Potential applicants, prior to initiating an application, should visit the Eligibility link on the Foundation website to see if they meet the requirements for a Howard Fellowship.
The deadline for this submission of applications is November 1, 2016.
